Tracing the Footsteps of Jesus #6
Personal Conversations

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" John 4:7

The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" John 4:9

Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water." John 4:10

"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water?  Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?" John 4:11-12

Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." John 4:13-14

The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water." John 4:15

He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back."
"I have no husband," she replied.
Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true." John 4:16-18

"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem." John 4:19-20

"Woman," Jesus replied, "believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.  John 4:21-22

Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." John 4:23-24

The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
Then Jesus declared, "I, the one speaking to you-I am he." John 4:25-26

He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.
Revelation 21:6

This Week the message is Personal Conversations. We end our small group series with a study that pointed out how Jesus cut through religious  prejudice and cultural barriers to reach all people.  Jesus spoke straight to our hearts and spent less time focusing on our differences.

Next Week is Celebration Sabbath. Our small groups will share their testimonies on what they have learned from the Tracing the Footsteps of Jesus small group series.  This is always an inspirational time of fellowship as we share how the Lord spoke to us through these past six weeks.

Men's Ministry: We are going to see Hacksaw Ridge tonight. See Pastor Cary if you'd like to attend.

Christmas Toy Collection: Please bring unwrapped toys for children. We will be helping to provide children with a toy this Christmas. Stuffed animals, balls, dolls, action figures, cars, and many other toys would all be awesome gifts a needy child would love to receive. Thank you for your generosity.

Tracing the Footsteps of Jesus #3
House of the Baker

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. Luke 2:6-7

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11

"I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the people of Sheth." Numbers 24:17

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." Micah 5:2

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.   Matthew 2:9-10

On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. Matthew 2:11-12

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Matthew 2:16

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  John 1:1-3

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

Tracing the Footsteps of Jesus #2
Scandal of Nazareth

When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.  Luke 1:57-58

And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, Luke 1:76

to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."  Luke 1:27-28

"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Luke 1:34-35

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.  Matthew 1:18

Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.  Matthew 1:19

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David.  David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,  Matthew 1:5-6

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times."  Micah 5:2

No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation.  Deuteronomy 23:3

"She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  "The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" (which means "God with us").  Matthew 1:21-22

Bible Heroes #7
Daniel - For the Glory of God

Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.  Daniel 6:3

Finally these men said, "We will never find any basis for charges against this man Daniel unless it has something to do with the law of his God."  Daniel 6:5

The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions' den. Daniel 6:7

Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10

When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him. Daniel 6:14

So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions' den. The king said to Daniel, "May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!" Daniel 6:16

When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?" Daniel 6: 20

"My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty."
Daniel 6:22

The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. Daniel 6:23

At the king's command, the men who had falsely accused Daniel were brought in and thrown into the lions' den, along with their wives and children. And before they reached the floor of the den, the lions overpowered them and crushed all their bones. Daniel 6:24

Then King Darius wrote to all the nations and peoples of every language in all the earth:
"May you prosper greatly! I issue a decree that in every part of my kingdom people must fear and reverence the God of Daniel. For he is the living God and he endures forever; his kingdom will not be destroyed, his dominion will never end." Daniel 6:25-26

So Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian. Daniel 6:28

Bible Heroes #6
Samuel - Knowing What Matters

I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord." And he worshiped the Lord there.  1 Samuel 1:27-28

And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people. 1 Samuel 2:26

The Lord said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king."  1 Samuel 16:1

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:10

But Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me." The Lord said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.' Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate." 1 Samuel 16:2-3

Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, "Do you come in peace?" Samuel replied, "Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 1 Samuel 16:4-5

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the Lord."
But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."  1 Samuel 16:6-7

Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, "The Lord has not chosen this one either." Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "Nor has the Lord chosen this one."
1 Samuel 16:8-9

So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the sons you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives." 1 Samuel 16:11

So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one." 1 Samuel 16:12

God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. 1 Corinthians 1:26-27

Ruth - Knowing Your Identity

In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. So a man from Bethlehem in Judah, together with his wife and two sons, went to live for a while in the country of Moab. The man's name was Elimelek, his wife's name was Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Kilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem, Judah. And they went to Moab and lived there.  Ruth 1:1-2

Now Elimelek, Naomi's husband, died, and she was left with her two sons. They married Moabite women, one named Orpah and the other Ruth. After they had lived there about ten years, both Mahlon and Kilion also died, and Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband. Ruth 1:3-5

But Naomi said, "Return home, my daughters. Why would you come with me? Am I going to have any more sons, who could become your husbands?  Ruth 1:11

But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me."  Ruth 1:16-17

At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground.  She asked him, "Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me - foreigner?"  Ruth 2:10

As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, "Let her gather among the sheaves and don't reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don't rebuke her."  Ruth 2:15-16

So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. Ruth 4:13

The women said to Naomi: "Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth." Ruth 4:14-15

Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women living there said, "Naomi has a son!" And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. Ruth 4:16-17

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  1 Peter 2:9

Bible Heroes #4
Abraham - Faith Triumphs

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6

Faith: a strong belief in God  based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!"
"Here I am," he replied.  Genesis 22:1

Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love-Isaac-and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you."  Genesis 22:2

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Genesis 22:6

Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?" Genesis 22:7

Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. Genesis 22:8

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.  Genesis 22:9-10

But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. Genesis 22:11

"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."  Genesis 22:12

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram  caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.  Genesis 22:13

So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided." Genesis 22:14

I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me." Genesis 22:17-18

Bible Heroes 3
Noah - Against the Grain

The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. Genesis 6:5

But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. Genesis 6:8-9

He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just.  Deuteronomy 32:4

Never let the culture compromise your walk with God

As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; Matthew 24:37-38

God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways.
Genesis 6:12

... if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others;    2 Peter 2:5

Share God's salvation even when the world rejects you.

So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out."  Genesis 6:13-14

Follow God even when it doesn't make sense.

I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark-you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you.   Genesis 6:17-18

Trust in God's promises even when the world seems to be falling apart.

By the first day of the first month of Noah's six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry.  Genesis 8:13

Be patient as you are waiting for the Lord's working in your life.

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it. The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: "Never again will I curse the ground..." Genesis 8:20-21

Living and praising God will change to the world.

Bible Heroes #2
Rahab - Faithfully Yours

8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, "I know that the LORD has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed. 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. 12 "Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, because I have shown kindness to you. Give me a sure sign 13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them-and that you will save us from death." 14 "Our lives for your lives!" the men assured her. "If you don't tell what we are doing, we will treat you kindly and faithfully when the LORD gives us the land." Joshua 2:8-14

Rahab was unfaithful to men

Rahab could be called a traitor
When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. Joshua 2:11

Rahab was faithful towards the Israelite spies
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

Rahab is honored by God and included in Jesus' family tree

Abel: The Offering

In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering--fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,   Genesis 4:3-4

but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.  Genesis 4:5

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead. Hebrews 11:4

Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. I Samuel 15:22

Our offering is not about what we are willing to give, but what God is asking us to give.

Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."  Genesis 4:6-7

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.  Genesis 4:8

Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" The Lord said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground."  Genesis 4:9-10

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship.  Romans 12:1

This Week the message is Bible Heroes #1 - Abel: The Offering. Today, we are starting a summer series that is themed around heroes of the Old Testament.  Our first hero comes from the story of Abel.  Abel was the first biblical martyr all because of his true offering to God.  This story tells us that our offering is not about what we are willing to give, but what God is asking us to give.

The Jesus Message

God is real

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20

The sin problem

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned... Romans 5:12

You can't do this alone

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.  Romans 3:20

It begins with faith

If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Accept God's grace

... just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:21

God will never leave you

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39

While religion can come with many complicated and confusing messages, Jesus' message was simple as he said, "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved" (John 10:9).  Today's message will be an important one to make sure our faith is centered on Christ and Christ alone.

Next Week we will have the VBS Closing program. Bill Aumack will wrap up the week and share some thoughts about how we know God is with us Wherever We Go.

Message Notes

The Lord's Supper is a participation in the emblems of the body and blood of Jesus as an expression of faith in Him, our Lord and Savior. In this experience of communion Christ is present to meet and strengthen His people. As we partake, we joyfully proclaim the Lord's death until He comes again. Preparation for the Supper includes self-examination, repentance, and confession. The Master ordained the service of foot-washing to signify renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christlike humility, and to unite our hearts in love. The communion service is open to all believing Christians.

(Matt. 26:17-30; John 6:48-63; 13:1-17; 1 Cor. 10:16, 17; 11:23-30; Rev. 3:20.)

Following the Lord's Example of Foot Washing

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash on another's feet. John 13:14

To participate in foot washing, please go the following rooms.
Families in the Fellowship Hall;
Women in the Classroom adjacent to kitchen;
Men in the Youth room.
You may also remain quietly in the sanctuary.

Celebrating Communion at the Lord's Table

As the bread and juice is served, please take the opportunity to serve one another. As the deacon or deaconess hands you the tray with the emblems on it, please carefully serve the person next to you.  Communion emphasizes service. Of course, if you need help, we will provide assistance.

We celebrate an open communion, which means that all who are old enough to understand what it means to accept Jesus as their Savior are invited to partake in communion. You do not have to be an official member of the Adventist Church to partake in communion.

The Bread
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." Luke 22:19

The Cup
In the same way, after supper he took the cup, Saying, "This cup in the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."  1 Cor. 11:25

This Week is Communion. This Sabbath we will be reminded of what Jesus had done for us as we partake of the Lord Supper. This special service creates an intimate encounter with Jesus which provides us an opportunity to recommit our lives to Him.

Next Week the sermon is The Jesus Message. While religion can come with many complicated and confusing messages, Jesus' message was simple as he said, "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved" (John 10:9).  Today's message will be an important one to make sure our faith is centered on Christ and Christ alone.

Remember our Church Budget. We are running a negative balance. We appreciate your faithfulness.

Vacation Bible School is July 18-22. If you would like to help, please talk to Bill or Linda. We need kitchen volunteers to prepare the food and clean up. Also, please sign up to bring some food in the foyer. Thanks!

The flowers today are for Grant's birthday from the Fishers.
