Bible Heroes #1
Abel: The Offering



In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering--fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering,   Genesis 4:3-4

but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.  Genesis 4:5

By faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead. Hebrews 11:4

Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. I Samuel 15:22


Our offering is not about what we are willing to give, but what God is asking us to give.


Then the Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it."  Genesis 4:6-7

Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.  Genesis 4:8

Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?" The Lord said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground."  Genesis 4:9-10

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God--this is your true and proper worship.  Romans 12:1

Alfonso Hoffman: Mike Garcia's 11 year old nephew was diagnosed with lymphoma. Remember him in prayer as he goes through treatments.
Sergio Garcia: He is recovering from another back surgery. Please pray for healing.
Johnny Macias: Please pray the infection in his leg will be healed.
Ava Meade: She requests prayer for healing from cancer.
Yolanda Ortegon: She requests prayer for healing and mobility.

This Week the message is Bible Heroes #1 - Abel: The Offering. Today, we are starting a summer series that is themed around heroes of the Old Testament.  Our first hero comes from the story of Abel.  Abel was the first biblical martyr all because of his true offering to God.  This story tells us that our offering is not about what we are willing to give, but what God is asking us to give.

Next Week the message is Bible Heroes #2 - Rahab: Faithfully Yours. Bill Aumack will share the message about the unlikely hero who is remembered as a person of faith.

The Memorial Service for Ava Meade will be Sunday, August 7, at 4pm at the Downey Adventist Church.

Parking Lot Party is coming Saturday Aug. 27th, right here in our parking lot. Make sure to save the date and bring a few friends.

The Jesus Message

God is real

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. Romans 1:20

The sin problem

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned... Romans 5:12

You can't do this alone

Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.  Romans 3:20

It begins with faith

If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Accept God's grace

... just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:21

God will never leave you

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39

This Week the sermon is The Jesus Message. While religion can come with many complicated and confusing messages, Jesus' message was simple as he said, "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved" (John 10:9).  Today's message will be an important one to make sure our faith is centered on Christ and Christ alone.

Next Week we will have the VBS Closing program. Bill Aumack will wrap up the week and share some thoughts about how we know God is with us Wherever We Go.

Message Notes

The Lord's Supper is a participation in the emblems of the body and blood of Jesus as an expression of faith in Him, our Lord and Savior. In this experience of communion Christ is present to meet and strengthen His people. As we partake, we joyfully proclaim the Lord's death until He comes again. Preparation for the Supper includes self-examination, repentance, and confession. The Master ordained the service of foot-washing to signify renewed cleansing, to express a willingness to serve one another in Christlike humility, and to unite our hearts in love. The communion service is open to all believing Christians.

(Matt. 26:17-30; John 6:48-63; 13:1-17; 1 Cor. 10:16, 17; 11:23-30; Rev. 3:20.)


Following the Lord's Example of Foot Washing

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash on another's feet. John 13:14

To participate in foot washing, please go the following rooms.
Families in the Fellowship Hall;
Women in the Classroom adjacent to kitchen;
Men in the Youth room.
You may also remain quietly in the sanctuary.


Celebrating Communion at the Lord's Table

As the bread and juice is served, please take the opportunity to serve one another. As the deacon or deaconess hands you the tray with the emblems on it, please carefully serve the person next to you.  Communion emphasizes service. Of course, if you need help, we will provide assistance.

We celebrate an open communion, which means that all who are old enough to understand what it means to accept Jesus as their Savior are invited to partake in communion. You do not have to be an official member of the Adventist Church to partake in communion.

The Bread
And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." Luke 22:19

The Cup
In the same way, after supper he took the cup, Saying, "This cup in the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."  1 Cor. 11:25

Choose Wisely


"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."    Declaration of Independence

The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.  And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden;  but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die." Genesis 2:15-17

Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. Proverbs 19:21

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Matthew 7:13-14

Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. I Corinthians 10:13

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20

This Week the message is Choose Wisely. While we live in a great country with many freedoms, our most cherished freedom is our right to worship. God has given us a free will to love and worship Him, and we should be grateful that our country values our right to do the same.

Next Week is Communion. This Sabbath we will be reminded of what Jesus had done for us as we partake of the Lord Supper. This special service creates an intimate encounter with Jesus which provides us an opportunity to recommit our lives to Him.
